Engages in Therapeutic and Professional Relationships

Registered Nurses (RN) are a vital component of the healthcare team at hospitals and clinics across Australia. An RN's job includes various functions, ranging from planning and assessment work to prevention and support functions. An RN must be able to continuously analyse and engage patients and develop an excellent therapeutic and professional relationship with them.

RNs are regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). A 3-year bachelor’s degree in nursing is a prerequisite to becoming an RN in Australia. Some RNs choose to study further, specializing in areas such as surgical, oncology, rehabilitation, aboriginal health, etc.

RNs are expected to follow the national Registered nurse standards for practice. Each standard has multiple points to show the practical application of the standard in the nurse’s practice.

Standard Two: The standard applies to an RNs relationship with both patients and colleagues.

The nurse demonstrates the following:

2.1 establishes, sustains and concludes relationships in a way that differentiates the boundaries between professional and personal relationships

2.2 communicates effectively, and is respectful of a person’s dignity, culture, values, beliefs and rights

2.3 recognises that people are the experts in the experience of their life

2.4 provides support and directs people to resources to optimise health-related decisions

2.5 advocates on behalf of people in a manner that respects the person’s autonomy and legal capacity

2.6 uses delegation, supervision, coordination, consultation and referrals in professional relationships to achieve improved health outcomes

2.7 actively fosters a culture of safety and learning that includes engaging with health professionals and others, to share knowledge and practice that supports person-centred care

2.8 participates in and/or leads collaborative practice, and

2.9 reports notifiable conduct of health professionals, health workers and others.

There are a total of 7 standards for RNs. These standards are meant to be read with the Code of conduct for nurses, Supervision guidelines for nursing and midwifery, and other applicable standards, guides, and codes of the board. The glossary provided by the NMBA is helpful in understanding the terminology of the standards.

RNs work in a team of healthcare professionals to provide care to a wide variety of patients. Nursing practice means much more than clinical care. It includes any role in which the nurse uses their knowledge and skills, including management roles, advisory jobs, research work, etc. Practice also encompasses both paid and unpaid job roles.
